Tarkmet’s electromechanical press has a high movement speed and a precisely adjustable pressing process

Tarkmet’s new product is the electromechanical press. Tarkmet started designing an electromechanical version after its customers expressed a desire for an alternative to hydraulic and eccentric presses.

“The electromechanical press combines the best qualities of both. Hydraulic presses are often slow but can easily be controlled throughout their stroke, both when it comes to pressing force and speed. Eccentric presses, on the other hand, are quick but difficult to adjust and control. Our electromechanical press is both quick and can be adjusted easily and accurately,” says Mechanical Engineer Keijo Olkinuora from Tarkmet.

There have been small electromechanical presses on the market for years, but Tarkmet is the only manufacturer of large-scale ones, as far as they know.

“The electromechanical presses available on the market have a maximum press force of 10 tonnes. Tarkmet’s electromechanical press, on the other hand, has a press force of hundreds of tonnes,” Olkinuora says.

Suitable for both industrial use and the laboratory

According to Automation Engineer Niko Kärjenmäki, the electromechanical press offers plenty of advantages.

“Our electromechanical press has a high movement speed, excellent positioning accuracy and outstanding ability to maintain the desired force. The press reacts quickly to commands, because there are no time lags in the system. Because the press contains no oil, it can also be installed in a clean space.”

Kärjenmäki explains that the electromechanical press can also be fitted into a smaller space than its hydraulic or eccentric siblings. He recommends the electromechanical variety particularly for industrial and laboratory use.

“An electrical cylinder press is suitable for all processes requiring a controlled compression motion. It also works excellently in quality assurance processes, such as testing the characteristics of materials or workpieces. That makes electromechanical presses well suited for materials testing in laboratories.”

A replacement for eccentric presses?

Tarkmet’s electromechanical presses rely on an NC process that utilises the same system as hydraulic presses, making them easy to use. Electromechanical presses can, for example, replace existing eccentric presses that do not meet today’s safety standards.

“We chart our customer’s needs and consider whether an electromechanical press is the right solution for them. When needed, we give a quote on both hydraulic and electromechanical versions,” Kärjenmäki says.
